Potentiaal

'Potentiaal', the current building for the faculty of Electrical Engineering on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology, will be transformed into a multi-purpose building providing students accommodation, offices, educational facilities and a cultural center.

Starting point for this entry for the architectural competition was the preservation of the existing cohesion between various campus buildings, the facades of which have comparable horizontalising characteristics. In line with this feature, the renewed 'Potentiaal' building conveys two identities: during the day the new outer skin of the double facade refers to the horizontal bands of the original curtain-wall facade. The inner, second skin, on the other hand, is geared to the specific program of requirements and determines the spectacular appearance of the renewed building during the night. The natural climate conditions of the space between the inner and outer skins are used for ventilation and heating purposes, and for a substantial decrease in energy demands of the building.

The renewed building can accommodate between 350 and 400 students. The cultural center and the restaurant are realized on three new floors, placed on top of the existing structure. These spaces allow for unique views across Eindhoven.
